The Art of Calligraphy
Lately I have been into calligraphy and attempting to learn it through books and design blogs. Some inspirational books I would recommend are Modern Calligraphy: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started in Script Calligraphy by Molly Suber Thorpe. In Modern Calligraphy, Molly walks you through all the steps and makes it fun and easy to follow along in a laid back style. There are enjoyable, practical projects at the back of the book. A few of these projects include: place cards, how to make your own rubber stamp and hidden surprise envelope liners! My only problem is trying to find time to do all the projects! Another book I am reading is Mastering Calligraphy: The Complete Guide to Hand Lettering by Gaye Godfrey-Nicholls. Mastering Calligraphy is more detailed oriented and goes into how to hold the pen and what angle it should be at when writing. There are also lovely bios of talented calligraphy artists sprinkled throughout the book. This books shows a great variety of calligraphy styles. A definite recommend if you want more of a traditional style of learning.
Practising calligraphy is challenging. It is exciting to see the progress in my work. Practise, and a lot of it, and maybe one day it will come naturally and beautifully. For the time being here are a few digital calligraphic fonts that make my mouth drop!
